On the US FTA, the dairy industry is getting on with the job of preparing for the agreement after it passed through the Senate on Friday. Dairy expects a tripling of access to the US, estimated to be worth $2,000 to $3,000 per dairy farmer. It's announced processors will use a government-controlled quota to allocate market share. The Australian Dairy Farmers Federation's John McQueen says getting the quota in place early will provide all farmers a chance to access the US market from January one next year. 'I think it's fair to say that every dairy company would want to have the whole quota to themselves; but they've agreed on a process which allows companies performance at both export and domestic production to be taken into account in terms of developing a share of the quota, and for that quota to grow.'
